2008 chevrolet malibu review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new for 2008. introductionthe chevrolet malibu nameplate has been around for a long, long time, in all kinds of shapes and sizes. This edition of the malibu shares its underpinnings with the other gm cars mounted on the epsilon front-drive platform, including the new saab 9-3, the new saturn aura, the pontiac g6, the european-market cadillac bls, and the german opel vectra. That's a fine group of cars to be associated with and the malibu is expected to be the biggest seller among them. chevrolet says it has modified the platform with some extra strength and extra steel in the central tunnel area and the bodysides to help quiet the car and improve its crash performance. More quiet was added with composite inner fenders, thicker glass, and sprayed-on sound insulation throughout the body cavities. Still more quiet was engineered into the induction system, to make the engine sound powerful but quiet at full-throttle and during downshifts. It strikes a nice balance between well-controlled handling and a smooth ride. Overall, the new malibu feels smooth and refined and pleasant to drive. the cabin is nicely designed, attractive, and everything is easy to operate, and the seats are comfortable. in short, we think the chevy malibu stands up well when held against the toyota camry and honda accord gold standards. Choosing among them largely comes down to nitpicking, splitting hairs and personal preference. Camry and accord may have an edge on resale value, but they're also likely to come with higher price tags. In any case, we don't see the gap between this chevrolet and the imports that we used to see. lineupthe 2008 chevrolet malibu range includes the ls 19,995), 1lt 20,995) 2lt 22,635), and ltz 26,995), plus the hybrid 22,790). The base model also comes with electric power steering, to saved drag on the engine, while the v6-powered models come with hydraulic power steering. lt models come with the 3. 6-liter v6 engine and six-speed automatic transmission along with stabilitrak yaw control, 17-inch wheels and tires, dual exhausts and manual shift control. ltz adds 18-inch alloy wheels and tires, fog lights and clean-lens led taillamps, and comes with a long list of standard equipment items, plus and a higher-capacity six-speed automatic. Stabilitrak electronic stability control comes standard on lt, ltz, and hybrid models and includes brake assist. walkaroundchevrolet has followed an industry-wide trend with the malibu, stretching the wheelbase a full six inches compared to the previous model, to get more interior room for the occupants and a smoother, quieter ride, with an overall length that's only three inches longer, which means the all-new body has the preferred wheels-at-the-corners look. the malibu looks masculine, brawny, yet clean and crisp. The bodysides are completely clean and uncluttered, and the twin round taillamps pay homage to the corvette. The dual-port grille is a contemporary chevrolet design cue. We think it works better on the silverado, but it gives the malibu a distinctive look, and distinction is the goal of the midsize sedan designer. The mid-level lt trim levels are expected to be the most popular, say gm executives, though the entry level ls-2 is also expected to be popular. This design is brought into the 21st century with wood and metallic trim and a very pleasing blue-on-white instrumentation graphic treatment that's flooded with blue light at night. less noticeable are thoughtful features such as the ambient lighting. A feature associated with expensive luxury cars recently popularized by mercedes and bmw, ambient lighting helps the driver and front passenger find secondary controls and items around the center console. A cubby on top of the dash is convenient for wallets and such, a useful feature subaru has used for years. cloth, suede and leather interior options are available. The standard interiors are single color, but several new two-tone interior combinations are available, including a dramatic black-and-saddle leather combination that's very attractive. we found the leather seats in the ltz quite comfortable. Piping in a contrasting tone dresses them up. The front bucket seats are somewhere between sumptuous and luscious in the way they look and the way they sit, very comfortable and supportive. the stretch in wheelbase affords each occupant plenty of room, and there is ample headroom and legroom in the rear compartment for six-foot-plus passengers. The backs of the front seats are dished out to add knee room. The rear seatbacks flip down to provide a pass-through to the trunk. the new cabin includes a dashtop storage bin, door cubbies, and seatback pockets, standard ambient lighting for the overhead console and door-pull pockets. We've never cared for the look of rolled-up sliding covers on center consoles due to their ability to attract crumbs. overall, the malibu interior is attractive and comfortable. The quality of the interior materials is good. We think it compares well to the cabin of the all-new 2008 honda accord. The quality of the hard plastic on the lower dash in the chevrolet isn't as nice as the material in the honda, and the material on the steering wheel hub is a little nicer on the honda, but it's still nothing to behold. The chevrolet has an attractive leather shift boot on cars with leather interiors is not found in the accord. every malibu comes with xm satellite radio and the latest version of onstar with turn-by-turn navigation. However, there's no gps navigation system nor is there a back-up camera. Chevrolet says people prefer to use their portable gps units and relatively few want to pay for an oem navigation system, but we're a little skeptical of this. big knobs and buttons and an elegant design make operating audio and climate functions easy. In fact, we found it easier and less confusing to make adjustments in the malibu than in a comparably equipped (non-navi) honda accord; the honda seems less intuitive and convenient. Unlike the honda, the chevrolet has the audio controls at the top, better because people tend to fiddle with their stereos more than their temperature controls. climate controls in the malibu are very easy to operate utilizing big knobs for fan and vent modes and simple, clearly labeled buttons. Honda splits the climate controls up, forcing the driver to examine them more closely before pressing a button. Window switches are conveniently mounted on the doors. The standard for suvs is completely redesigned. introductionthe introduction of the all-new jeep grand cherokee represents a bold move by daimlerchrysler. Yet its proportions are completely different from before, with more steel and less glass, a laid-back windshield, the trademark giant wheel well flares, and a slickly angular body without the cladding of the previous generations; just one small spear. The d-pillar has been laid forward, which cuts into cargo space, but it sure looks cool. It's got a replaceable chin spoiler on it, and it looks mean. Inside, it's got nearly 70 cubic feet of storage and three modern, if not brand-new, powerplants. interior materials are dramatically improved over the previous model's, which left much to be desired. The atmosphere inside the new grand cherokee is light, comfortable, and more enveloping than the previous model, more bolted in than hanging on from the driver's perspective, with lots of seat adjustment, excellent outward vision around the relatively slim posts, and all the switches and controls clearly labeled and easy to find and use. for the first time, a jeep can be married to the engine that put chrysler back on the map, the 5. 7-liter hemi. It's particularly good for towing or driving at higher elevations. However, we found the 4. 7-liter v8 worked great. The standard v6 is a vast improvement over jeep's old inline-6. A new suspension gives the grand cherokee much better handling, leaning less in corners, along with better ride quality. Its turning radius is tighter, too, good when driving off road or in crowded parking lots. jeep engineers have come up with a larger, edgier and more macho suv with an engine that's among the most powerful in the segment. This is after years of being afflicted with old, weak engines and saddled with a small cargo compartment. lineupjeep grand cherokee comes in two models, laredo and limited. The basic laredo comes standard with a 210-horsepower 3. 7-liter v6 and a five-speed overdrive automatic transmission. A 4. 7-liter v8 or 5. 7-liter hemi v8 is available for both laredo and limited. Side curtain air bags are optional. a dynamic handling system (dhs) is available as part of the quadra-drive ii 4x4 system on late-2005 hemi models. Dhs reduces body roll, or lean, when cornering, resulting in sportier handling. An electronic stability program (esp) is also available, and comes packaged with the hemi. options include gps navigation built into the radio 1,200), a rear-seat dvd entertainment system, a trailer tow package 255), boston acoustics audio, uconnect hands-free communication system 275), smart beam headlamps that sense the available natural light and adjust accordingly, and rear park assist 1,200). The traditional off-road package 420) with tow hooks is available, along with chromed alloy wheels, and an engine block heater for winter trekking. On the limited model, the gauges are surrounded by chrome rings. the cargo area features a reversible load floor panel that flips over on itself to create a shallow container, for more versatility in the rear storage compartment. As a system, the new interior is far better organized, more light in feeling and color, and altogether more roomy than the previous version, which had been around since 1993. driving impressionto be honest, we didn't like the old grand cherokee very much, because we never thought it was very grand. It was small inside, with a dark, confusing interior, too much plastic, really cheap seats, and not much cargo space, but always fun off-road. This new grand cherokee erases all the bad stuff about the old version, but keeps the mountain-goat-like off-road performance, finally becoming grand in the process. the basic laredo comes standard with the chrysler-made 210-horsepower single-overhead-cam 3. 7-liter v6, borrowed from its sister trucks, the jeep liberty and dodge ram, with its own five-speed overdrive automatic transmission. The 3. 7 replaces the tired, old 4-liter inline six engine that was in the last grand cherokee and was a relic from american motors' inventory of 25 years ago (still used in the wrangler). The v6 gets an epa-rated 16/21 mpg city/highway, while the v8s get 14/21. It's coupled with new lighter, more compact and more precise power rack-and-pinion steering that's reasonably quick and accurate, and nicely weighted. There seemed to be a more flatfooted, glued-down attitude with this big jeep, with far less body roll than the previous model, which had a bit of body roll built into it that paid some comfort dividends off-road. This one is just as comfortable on- and off-road without it. front suspension travel is increased by almost 10 percent over the previous grand cherokee, and the new steering geometry yields a tighter turning circle, which counts heavily off road. A new five-link rear suspension combined with the new steering and new front suspension produced a boulevard ride, and cornering prowess, like no other jeep in history, an enormous improvement. We don't usually go around flinging 4500-pound suvs into corners, but this one invited a little bad behavior, which was very rewarding within the limits of its tires. New flagship delivers elegance, ride, handling. introductionbuick is overhauling its lineup and the lucerne is the second new car, following last year's introduction of the lacrosse. In keeping with tradition, the 2006 buick lucerne is positioned as an affordable entry-level full-size luxury car. The lucerne replaces the lesabre and the park avenue, which are no longer being made. buick says the v6 models compete with the toyota avalon and lexus es 330, and likes to compare the v8 models with the infiniti m and lexus gs, which cost much more than the top of the line lucerne cxs. In any case, we found the new lucerne to be a plush, highly competent full-size sedan at a compelling price. buick's new flagship sedan boasts clean lines suggestive of fine german sedans, while maintaining buick traditions. Inside, it's elegant and comfortable and easy. Underway, the lucerne is smooth and quiet, but its steering is precise and it handles winding roads with aplomb. These are benefits of a new chassis and structure the lucerne shares with the all-new 2006 cadillac dts. The dts and lucerne represent gm's new, full-size, front-wheel-drive luxury sedans. the most enjoyable of the new buicks is the lucerne cxs with its magnetic ride control, a sports suspension developed for the corvette and cadillac xlr that further improves handling. Yet we might opt for the lucerne cxl v6, a very enjoyable car to drive, with agile handling and plenty of performance. lineupthe 2006 buick lucerne is offered in three trim levels. All come standard with a comprehensive list of safety features including six airbags that include a dual-stage driver's bag and a dual depth front passenger bag. Traction control, anti-lock brakes, and a tire pressure monitor are standard on all models. Six-passenger seating is available by ordering the front bench seat 250). The optional comfort and convenience package 450) includes features an electrochromic rearview mirror, universal home remote, illuminated visors with vanity mirrors, intermittent front wipers with rainsense, and body-colored outside power, heated, mirrors. Cxs also has upgraded leather seats with eight-way power seats with memory for driver and front passenger. The cxs also features a nine-speaker, 280-watt harman kardon audio system with xm satellite radio. options for the lucerne include heated/cooled front seats; factory-installed remote start; ultrasonic rear parking assist; rain-sensing windshield wiper system; the first heated windshield washer fluid application in its class; six-disc in-dash cd changer with mp3 capability; and a dvd-based navigation system. walkaroundthere is no mistaking the lucerne for anything other than a buick. The lucerne has a handsome appearance with a good stance thanks to its long wheelbase and wide track. The classic buick waterfall grill blends in well with the large integrated headlamps. The side profile, with its steeply raked windshield, is reminiscent of several recently introduced european sedans such as the vw passat and audi a6. The rear of the lucerne features a high trunk line with nicely integrated tail lamps. chrome trim is kept to a minimum. The only stylistic link to buicks of old are the small portholes on each side of the front fenders. That means the lucerne benefits from the newest techniques for building a quiet luxury car. these include hydroformed frame rails for a stiffer body and use of laminated steel with plenty of sound deadening material placed in strategic locations. Buick engineers shaped the outside of the door mirrors to lessen wind noise. Laboratory test results show that the lucerne is quieter than a lexus es 330 and this was evident in a back-to-back driving comparison. much like the exterior, the lucerne's interior is cleanly designed with just enough touches of wood and chrome trim to make it luxurious without being too opulent. The dashboard is fairly traditional in design with a smallish instrument pod containing three round gauges in front of the steering wheel. the center stack with large knobs for operating the climate control and audio system is located high up for easy access. six airbags provide plenty of protection in a crash. Along with the cadillac dts, the lucerne gets the first ever application of a dual-depth passenger airbag. It has two sections; a smaller section deploys in a less severe crash or if the passenger is small or seated nearer the dashboard. In a bad crash or if the passenger is not wearing their seat belt the full bag deploys for maximum effect. for those who need seating for six, buick continues to offer a traditional front bench seat in all but the performance cxs model. Most people opt for front bucket seats, which provide a good level of comfort and have an armrest in the center console. rear-seat passengers are well taken care of with good headroom and excellent leg room. The lucerne handled with aplomb, exhibiting no wallowing or causing any untoward moments. A rigid chassis is the key to balance sharp handling with a smooth ride, and the new lucerne really delivers. the lucerne's ride is excellent, thanks to the long wheelbase and stiff body structure. In back-to-back driving along a stretch of less than perfect road, we found the lucerne's ride quality comparable to that of the benchmark 2006 toyota avalon. Buick loyalists who are used to a cushy ride will not complain about the lucerne. It might be stiffer than they are used to but it's still plenty smooth enough. And the steering is precise and responsive. the cxs features gm's magnetic ride control, a sports suspension designed to enhance overall ride performance. Magnetic ride control uses magnetically charged particles suspended in a synthetic fluid to continuously adjust the fluid's viscosity to varying road surfaces and driving characteristics. The system, which first appeared on the sporty cadillac xlr and then the corvette, delivers a quicker response than conventional valve-damping systems. We tried a cxs with the system and found it did handle better but not significantly. indeed, when we tried a cxl v6 we were pleasantly surprised at just how well it performed. With the lighter v6, the cxl seemed more agile on twisty roads and the front end felt a bit lighter. The v6 models also suffer less from torque steer, a slight tugging felt through the steering wheel when turning and accelerating at the same time. so which model? We were pleased with its performance. However, gm's excellent stabilitrak electronic stability control system is available with the v8 models, which improves driving control by reducing the chance of skidding. Stabilitrak is well worth having. summarythe all-new buick lucerne is an attractive near-luxury car offering looks, features, quality and value.
