That's quite a commitment to the belief that the u. So if the sentra is the second car they've owned in their lifetime, it might be a step up in size. Nissan believes that these folks virtually live in their cars, so in designing the new sentra, they've tried to create a 'mobile backpack.' the cabin is more spacious, and is finished like a more expensive car, with wonderfully supportive seats in either cloth or rich leather. One thing the sentra doesn't have, surprisingly, is a fifth door: no hatchback model, only the sedan. But at least the 60/40 rear seats fold flat, opening up the trunk space, creating a large flat cargo area, or a cozy space for two echo boomers to sleep. there's an all-new aluminum 2. 0-liter engine, more powerful and fuel efficient than before, to go with the new chassis and body. It's mated to either a wonderful six-speed gearbox, or an optional new cvt, continuously variable transmission. Cruise control is unavailable. Anti-lock brakes are optional 250). the 2. 0s adds 16-inch steel wheels, six-way manual driver's seat, power mirrors, remote entry, a six-speaker sound system, illuminated steering wheel audio controls, and vehicle information display. Abs is still optional, and at least cruise control is available. the 2. 0sl adds leather interior, 16-inch alloy wheels, abs with brake force distribution, keyless ignition, cruise control, and bluetooth hands-free phone technology. for all models, foglamps 270) and rear deck lid 210) are optional. A clever original feature called the divide-n-hide trunk (a secret space behind the rear seats) is optional with the 2. 0s and 2. 0sl, as is satellite radio wiring. safety equipment is extensive on all models, including dual-stage front airbags, front side airbags, full length curtain airbags, active front seat headrests, and a tire pressure monitoring system. It seems odd that anti-lock brakes aren't standard, and electronic stability control isn't available. walkaroundnissan has brought the sentra more into the family, with styling from a clean sheet of paper. It looks like a scaled-down maxima now, with all the right curves, lines, and sculpted shapes. From every angle, it looks like a new nissan, with its crisp character lines. This means better balance on the road. And the latest chassis are safer, with crush zones built into less space. There's an upcoming funny commercial featuring a rumpled echo boomer who makes a documentary of himself living 24/7 in his sentra. One thing, for example, is a locking glovebox deep enough to hold a laptop computer. There's also an integrated removable cd holder on the headliner above the driver's sun visor; cupholders that are adjustable for 20-ounce bottles, 32-ounce mega cups, or cellphones and dvds; and pockets with see-through netting on the backs of the front seats for passengers' cellphones and ipods. with 97. 4 cubic feet of cabin space, the '07 sentra has more room than the mazda3, honda civic, toyota corolla, and chevy cobalt, in that order. In trunk volume, the cobalt makes up for it, with 13. 9 cubic feet, compared to the sentra's 13. 1; but the sentra has something simple but clever, in its optional (2. 0s and 2. 0sl) 'divide-n-hide' trunk. The trunk is so deep that it can accept a false folding back, creating a secret space about 20 inches wide, just behind the rear seat. we spent time in both a bare-bones sentra 2. 0 with cloth seats, and the fully equipped 2. 0sl with leather. When there's no one back there, the 60/40 split rear seat drops flat, to open up the space into the trunk. There's no problem fitting a bicycle (or maybe two) back there, through the trunk; two friendly echo boomers could even sleep back there. but the new instrument panel might be the nicest aspect of the interior. Again, very stylish, and functional too. The instruments are sharp, the controls easy to operate, and the center stack features a strong-looking shift lever rising out at a 45-degree angle. It makes 140 horsepower (same as the '06 honda civic, 14 hp more than the toyota corolla and 10 hp less than the mazda3), but it's been designed to produce strong torque; with 147 pound-feet, it beats those others. The flow of traffic in northern california was more than 80 mph, and the sentra ran 90 with ease. This is the third generation of that transmission, and the technology improves in leaps. The main benefit with a cvt is less internal friction, for better gas mileage. With only two ranges, high and low, it's smoother because there's less shifting, although the sound is odd, like the car is winding up. The 2007 nissan altima has a manual mode for the cvt transmission, turning it into a six-speed; but the sentra, alas, does not. the suspension is a new independent configuration in front, with a torsion beam in the rear, a compact design with separate shocks and coil springs that allows more room for the trunk that's above it. It's firm in a quality kind of way, yet never harsh or uncomfortable. It feels rugged and inspires confidence, out there in the cruel world of potholes. the brakes feel even better. Vented 11-inch discs in front and drums in rear. It's unfortunate that abs isn't standard except in the 2. 0 sl, especially considering all the other standard safety equipment; but at least the option is only $250. It's speed-sensitive, which means the feel is lighter when parking and heavier out on the freeway, as it should be. summarythe word that applies to every aspect of the all-new 2007 sentra is solid. Nissan has nailed this one, from a design standpoint. It's got a new engine, chassis, styling and interior, all of which are excellent and will keep the sentra near the top of its competitive class of well-built cars. The se-r models have more power and better handling, but they're easy to live with and offer all the advantages of the standard sentra. For 2009, se-r models have a new premium audio package and two new exterior colors. sentra 2. 0 models come with an aluminum 2. 0-liter engine and a choice of a wonderful six-speed manual gearbox or a cvt continuously variable automatic transmission. All-new for 2008. introductionthe chevrolet malibu nameplate has been around for a long, long time, in all kinds of shapes and sizes. This edition of the malibu shares its underpinnings with the other gm cars mounted on the epsilon front-drive platform, including the new saab 9-3, the new saturn aura, the pontiac g6, the european-market cadillac bls, and the german opel vectra. That's a fine group of cars to be associated with and the malibu is expected to be the biggest seller among them. chevrolet says it has modified the platform with some extra strength and extra steel in the central tunnel area and the bodysides to help quiet the car and improve its crash performance. More quiet was added with composite inner fenders, thicker glass, and sprayed-on sound insulation throughout the body cavities. Still more quiet was engineered into the induction system, to make the engine sound powerful but quiet at full-throttle and during downshifts. It strikes a nice balance between well-controlled handling and a smooth ride. Overall, the new malibu feels smooth and refined and pleasant to drive. the cabin is nicely designed, attractive, and everything is easy to operate, and the seats are comfortable. in short, we think the chevy malibu stands up well when held against the toyota camry and honda accord gold standards. Choosing among them largely comes down to nitpicking, splitting hairs and personal preference. Camry and accord may have an edge on resale value, but they're also likely to come with higher price tags. In any case, we don't see the gap between this chevrolet and the imports that we used to see. lineupthe 2008 chevrolet malibu range includes the ls 19,995), 1lt 20,995) 2lt 22,635), and ltz 26,995), plus the hybrid 22,790). The base model also comes with electric power steering, to saved drag on the engine, while the v6-powered models come with hydraulic power steering. lt models come with the 3. 6-liter v6 engine and six-speed automatic transmission along with stabilitrak yaw control, 17-inch wheels and tires, dual exhausts and manual shift control. ltz adds 18-inch alloy wheels and tires, fog lights and clean-lens led taillamps, and comes with a long list of standard equipment items, plus and a higher-capacity six-speed automatic. Stabilitrak electronic stability control comes standard on lt, ltz, and hybrid models and includes brake assist. walkaroundchevrolet has followed an industry-wide trend with the malibu, stretching the wheelbase a full six inches compared to the previous model, to get more interior room for the occupants and a smoother, quieter ride, with an overall length that's only three inches longer, which means the all-new body has the preferred wheels-at-the-corners look. the malibu looks masculine, brawny, yet clean and crisp. The bodysides are completely clean and uncluttered, and the twin round taillamps pay homage to the corvette. The dual-port grille is a contemporary chevrolet design cue. We think it works better on the silverado, but it gives the malibu a distinctive look, and distinction is the goal of the midsize sedan designer. The mid-level lt trim levels are expected to be the most popular, say gm executives, though the entry level ls-2 is also expected to be popular. This design is brought into the 21st century with wood and metallic trim and a very pleasing blue-on-white instrumentation graphic treatment that's flooded with blue light at night. less noticeable are thoughtful features such as the ambient lighting. A feature associated with expensive luxury cars recently popularized by mercedes and bmw, ambient lighting helps the driver and front passenger find secondary controls and items around the center console. A cubby on top of the dash is convenient for wallets and such, a useful feature subaru has used for years. cloth, suede and leather interior options are available. The standard interiors are single color, but several new two-tone interior combinations are available, including a dramatic black-and-saddle leather combination that's very attractive. we found the leather seats in the ltz quite comfortable. Piping in a contrasting tone dresses them up. The front bucket seats are somewhere between sumptuous and luscious in the way they look and the way they sit, very comfortable and supportive. the stretch in wheelbase affords each occupant plenty of room, and there is ample headroom and legroom in the rear compartment for six-foot-plus passengers. The backs of the front seats are dished out to add knee room. The rear seatbacks flip down to provide a pass-through to the trunk. the new cabin includes a dashtop storage bin, door cubbies, and seatback pockets, standard ambient lighting for the overhead console and door-pull pockets. We've never cared for the look of rolled-up sliding covers on center consoles due to their ability to attract crumbs. overall, the malibu interior is attractive and comfortable. The quality of the interior materials is good. We think it compares well to the cabin of the all-new 2008 honda accord. The quality of the hard plastic on the lower dash in the chevrolet isn't as nice as the material in the honda, and the material on the steering wheel hub is a little nicer on the honda, but it's still nothing to behold. The chevrolet has an attractive leather shift boot on cars with leather interiors is not found in the accord. every malibu comes with xm satellite radio and the latest version of onstar with turn-by-turn navigation. However, there's no gps navigation system nor is there a back-up camera. Chevrolet says people prefer to use their portable gps units and relatively few want to pay for an oem navigation system, but we're a little skeptical of this. big knobs and buttons and an elegant design make operating audio and climate functions easy. In fact, we found it easier and less confusing to make adjustments in the malibu than in a comparably equipped (non-navi) honda accord; the honda seems less intuitive and convenient. Unlike the honda, the chevrolet has the audio controls at the top, better because people tend to fiddle with their stereos more than their temperature controls. climate controls in the malibu are very easy to operate utilizing big knobs for fan and vent modes and simple, clearly labeled buttons. Honda splits the climate controls up, forcing the driver to examine them more closely before pressing a button. Window switches are conveniently mounted on the doors. They have the smooth styling of the latest-generation pontiacs, sharing cues with the solstice roadster and other models and sort of a lexus/toyota look from the rear. In fact, the g6 led this latest pontiac styling revolution. Its clean, uncluttered lines are quite pleasing. instead of side cladding, there is a single spear running down the sides of the g6 with an optional delicately integrated spoiler lip on the trailing edge of the decklid. gtp models look similar to the gts, but with a spoiler and chrome exhaust tips. The base version has almost no decoration at all, and is relatively dull-looking. the coupe and convertible inject a little more excitement into the styling. The two share the same sleek profile, although the roof on the coupe looks much better integrated (for obvious reasons). The frameless windows are indexed, meaning that they automatically open 0. 25 inch when the doors are opened, and close again when the door is closed for a tight seal. From the rear, both cars feature narrow taillights and a sloping decklid that looks similar to the toyota solara coupe and convertible. We think it's an improvement over the blander styling of the sedan. the pontiac g6 is built in michigan on gm's international epsilon platform, from parts and ideas used on the saab 9-3, opel vectra, and chevrolet malibu. all g6 models use the long wheelbase version of the epsilon platform (like the malibu maxx), which gives them ride and handling finesse, with a structural stiffness that helps the g6 achieve a 27. 3 hz bending frequency, a big number that ranks with most luxury cars. Pontiac says the car is designed with three major torque rings that add stiffness and strength without taking up too much space or adding weight. In addition to the torque rings, the g6 structure also uses high-strength steel for about 60 percent of underbody components and central tunnel. Rather than just a single layer of sheet steel, the tunnel has an extra piece of steel welded between it and the floor pan. The stiff body uses fully isolated front and rear subframes to carry the heavy stuff, and the front one is hydroformed for strength and light weight. these measures can be experienced in the smooth ride and sharp handling of the g6. interiorthe pontiac g6 has a nice interior with attractive fabrics and comfortable bucket seats. At first, it has that tank-like pontiac feeling of sitting down low in the cockpit, but that feeling goes away with a little familiarity and the g6 becomes a happy companion. The cabin is altogether different from the old soft-plastic, fat-knob theme of older pontiacs. It's much more modern, more european. the sporty front bucket seats are made for body comfort and body retention in high-speed maneuvers, and they are very comfortable and thickly padded. rear-seat space benefits from the relatively long wheelbase of 112. 3 inches. In the sedan, a 6-foot, 4-inch passenger can sit behind a 6-foot, 4-inch driver with plenty of room. Those with tall friends or family may want to remember that the panoramic sunroof is powered by a motor that takes up a big chunk of headroom at the trailing edge of the sedan's headliner. The coupe's rear seating is a little tighter, and the convertible's tighter still, especially in shoulder and hip room. Instruments and controls are presented in white on black (red at night). Every single knob and escutcheon has a chrome ring around it; very tasteful, and nicely presented, with small, conservative graphics on the faces and labels. the center stack has a red-led readout and control panel that allows every owner to use the sound system's features, and to customize the locking, lighting, and other functions, with a trip computer and driver information system that's easy, intuitive and fun to use. The audio system works well and the knobs are sized well for operating while driving, a welcome relief from the tiny buttons and knobs on many systems. It's remarkable how easily it works, and keeps conversation possible even at very high road speeds. It's an interesting feature and we recommend it. the convertible's top was engineered with karmann, which specializes in convertibles. The big top opens and closes within 30 seconds, storing under the truck lid and a hard tonneau cover when open. We found it works exceptionally well, powering up or down with the press of a button. Hold the button down after it's done and the windows will power up or down appropriately. the trunk is still accessible when the top is down, but space is reduced from a tiny 5. 8 cubic feet to a grocery-bag sized 1. 8 cubic feet. The trunklid on the convertible was heavy and relatively hard to lift open. driving impressionthe pontiac g6 is fun to drive and quite pleasant for cruising around. We found the sedan, coupe and convertible models reasonably quiet around town.
